About RutPlanner
RutPlanner is a free deer hunting resource that helps whitetail hunters plan their season around the two things that matter most: when the rut peaks and when the season is open. We combine state season dates, rut phase timing, moon and solunar data, and a vacation planning tool into one simple, no signup, no app calendar for all 50 states.
Our goal is straightforward. We want to save you the hours normally spent digging through state agency PDFs, hunting forums, and outdated blog posts. Everything you need to time your hunt lives in one place, updated for the 2026 season. You can open the free planner or browse rut and season dates by state at any time.
What We Do
RutPlanner brings together several planning tools that most hunters otherwise have to piece together on their own.
- Peak rut dates and full rut phase timelines (pre-rut, peak, post-rut, and second rut) for every state
- Archery, rifle, and muzzleloader season opening and closing dates
- Moon phase and solunar activity ratings for daily hunt planning
- A vacation planner that ranks the best multi-day windows to request time off, based on rut phase, open season, and moon conditions
- State-by-state landing pages and an editorial blog covering rut science, gear, and regional forecasts
Every tool is free to use. There is no login, no paywall, and no download required.
How We Source Our Information
Accuracy matters to us, and we are transparent about where our data comes from. Rut timing is based on photoperiod (the shortening of daylight hours), which is the primary biological trigger for the whitetail rut. Because of this, peak rut occurs at nearly the same calendar dates every year, and our dates reflect that consistency.
Our rut windows are compiled from state wildlife agency fetal aging studies, university deer research, and long-running hunter observation data. Season dates are gathered from official state Departments of Natural Resources and wildlife agencies. Solunar and moon calculations are derived from established astronomical formulas.
We want to be clear about one important point. The dates we publish are statewide averages. Local rut timing can vary by up to two weeks depending on your specific latitude, elevation, and local deer herd genetics. States with high regional variation carry a warning flag in our planner. We always recommend cross-referencing our information with your local wildlife agency and your own trail camera observations before you hunt.
Why We Built RutPlanner
RutPlanner was created by hunters who were tired of scattered, hard-to-read season information. Booking time off work for a hunting trip means committing months in advance, often before you know whether your dates will line up with peak rut. We built the vacation planner specifically to solve that problem, so you can request your time off with confidence and hunt when the odds are in your favor.
We are an independent resource. Our focus is on giving hunters clear, useful, and honest information rather than pushing a product or a subscription.
A Note on Accuracy and Safety
Hunting regulations change, and no online tool should be your only source. Always verify season dates, license requirements, and legal hunting hours with your official state agency before you head afield. RutPlanner is a planning aid, not a substitute for current, official regulations. Please hunt safely and legally.

RutPlanner is free to use, and we keep it that way through advertising. We may display third-party ads, including ads served by Google, to support the cost of maintaining the site and researching our data. These ads help us continue offering our tools at no charge to you.
